چکیده

A phase-field model is developed for predicting the polarization switching and domain structure evolution under an applied electric field in ferroelectric polycrystals. The model takes into account realistic grain structures as well as various energetic contributions, including elastic energy, electrostatic energy, and domain wall energy. A hysteresis loop – average polarization as a function of applied electric field – is computed, and the detailed domain evolution process during switching is analyzed. In particular, the role of grain boundaries in the nucleation and growth of new domains is studied. It is shown that switching takes place through the nucleation of 90 domains at grain boundaries and subsequent growth into the grain interiors instead of direct 180 domain switching. A correlation between the domain structures in neighboring grains was observed, and polarization switching in one grain was found to affect the switching in neighboring grains. 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Nanoelectromechanics of polarization switching in piezoresponse force microscopy

Nanoscale polarization switching in ferroelectric materials by piezoresponse force microscopy in weak and strong indentation limits is analyzed using exact solutions for coupled electroelastic fields under the tip. Tip-induced domain switching is mapped on the Landau theory of phase transitions, with domain size as an order parameter. For a point charge interacting with a ferroelectric surface,...

High-resolution studies of domain switching behavior in nanostructured ferroelectric polymers.

We have demonstrated an effective electrical control of polarization in the individual crystalline nanomesas of the ferroelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride)-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) and its relation to the polymer structure. The mechanism of polarization reversal has been investigated via sub-10 nm real space imaging of domain pattern evolution under an applied electric field. The ...

Multidomain switching in the ferroelectric nanodots

Controlling the polarization switching in the ferroelectric nanocrystals, nanowires and nanodots has an inherent specificity related to the emergence of depolarization field that is associated with the spontaneous polarization. This field splits the finite-size ferroelectric sample into polarization domains. Here, based on 3D numerical simulations, we study the formation of 180◦ polarization do...

Phase transitions and domain structures of ferroelectric nanoparticles: Phase field model incorporating strong elastic and dielectric inhomogeneity

An efficient numerical algorithm based on a Fourier spectral iterative perturbation method is proposed to accurately compute the electrostatic fields in three-dimensional (3D) microstructures with arbitrary dielectric inhomogeneity and anisotropy. The method can be conveniently implemented in phase field modeling of microstructure evolution in systems with inhomogeneous dielectric constants as ...
